Do research and network with others. Good journalist research what they don’t know. Don’t just take someones word for it, especially online, back it up with facts and share your sources. You don’t need to be the expert at everything, people understand that. Following up is networking. Start building a network of other business owners that can help you. Go beyond referrals, how can you work with each other to help build a like minded community around your complimentary businesses.
Journalist know how to tell a story. No you don’t need to go back to college for creative writing. However, you need to be able to tell a compelling story with your content. If that with text articles, videos, or podcasts, it doesn’t matter. Everything that you put our needs to take people through a journey.
Dealing with criticism. Journalist are always in communication with people, business, governments, you name it… As is the nature of journalism, there is a high level of criticism. It can come from anywhere, an editor correcting your article to the public on social media.
As an entrepreneur, it is sometimes difficult to hear that people don’t like your product or service. Don’t be overwhelmed, take the time to re-focus on whats important to you. This process takes time, but it’s a great way to turn new customers into loyal fans who are invested in your brand. The more you share, the more they can relate to you and your business.
Tell your own story. You built your business because YOU believe in what you do. So you need to show that. Remember your customers are a reflection of you. Journalist always look for the human side of a topic, in this case that’s you. This doesn’t mean you always talk about your personal life, just simply remember to ad your personality to what you produce.
Balance. If you own a business, you know the balance of your personal life, company projects, and customers can be difficult. Journalist are in the same boat, but in some ways on a higher level, often working on multiple deadlines at once. This doesn’t mean they work harder than small business owners. Quite the opposite, it means they have gotten used to the pressure. They do this by being organised and vigilant about what to do next.
