Every 10 years the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers updates History of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a book dedicated to showcasing the organizations history and impact on local communities.
For their latest edition of the publication, the Office of History of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requested to use a photo of the Gruber Wagon Works taken by Hugg Media Group for Berks Weekly for use in the book.
Located at the Berks County Heritage Center, the Gruber Wagon Works survives as one of the most complete examples of an integrated rural manufactory of its kind in the nation. Erected in 1882 by Franklin H. Gruber, the wagon works evolved from a single craftsman shop, having a variety of specialized hand tools, into a family-operated business which employed up to 20 men who utilized mass-production methods. The Gruber Wagon Works is designated as a National Historical Landmark and was moved to the Berks County Heritage Center in 1967 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from its original location in Mt. Pleasant.
When released, the book will be available in paper back and an eBook edition.
